iPhone Case Compatibility: Which Case Fits Your iPhone?

Unlike Apple Watch bands, iPhone cases are not interchangeable between models — not even between phones that look almost identical. Every generation changes something small: the height or width by a millimeter or two, the position of a button, or the size of the camera area. A case that is even slightly off can cover a button, block the camera, or leave a corner exposed. This guide explains how case compatibility works, how to find your exact iPhone model, and which case to buy for the recent iPhone families.

Why iPhone Cases Are Model-Specific

A case has to align with the phone to a fraction of a millimeter. Three things change from model to model:

  • Dimensions. Height, width, and thickness shift slightly with nearly every release. A case molded for one model will be loose or impossibly tight on another.
  • Buttons. The Action button (introduced on the iPhone 15 Pro) and the Camera Control button (introduced on the iPhone 16 family) sit in specific places. A case from the wrong generation will cover them or leave cutouts in the wrong spot.
  • Camera area. The camera plateau grows and changes shape over generations — most dramatically on the iPhone 17 Pro models, which use a full-width plateau. A case with a smaller camera opening will not sit flat.

This is why cases are sold for an exact model, and why "close enough" is not a reliable way to shop.

Will an iPhone 16 Case Fit an iPhone 17?

No. The iPhone 17 is slightly taller than the iPhone 16, the buttons sit in different positions, and the camera area is a different size and shape. An iPhone 16 case forced onto an iPhone 17 will fit poorly: it may press on buttons, sit unevenly around the camera, or leave the phone's corners under-protected. The same applies across the Pro lines — an iPhone 16 Pro case does not fit an iPhone 17 Pro, whose camera plateau is much larger. When you upgrade your phone, plan on a new case made for that exact model. You can browse cases by model in our iPhone case collection.

How to Find Your Exact iPhone Model

If you are not sure which iPhone you have, do not guess from the color or the number of cameras. Check the phone itself:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap General, then About.
  3. Look at Model Name — this is the exact model (for example, "iPhone 16 Pro Max") to match when buying a case.

If the phone will not turn on, the model name is also printed on the original box, and on the SIM tray or inside the tray slot on some models. The Model Name in Settings is the most reliable source and takes ten seconds to check.

Compatibility Table: Recent iPhone Models

Each model below needs its own case. Models in the same family do not share cases with each other either — a 16 Plus case, for example, does not fit a 16.

Model Screen size Case to buy
iPhone 17 6.3" iPhone 17 case
iPhone 17 Pro 6.3" iPhone 17 Pro case
iPhone 17 Pro Max 6.9" iPhone 17 Pro Max case
iPhone 16 6.1" iPhone 16 case
iPhone 16 Plus 6.7" iPhone 16 Plus case
iPhone 16 Pro 6.3" iPhone 16 Pro case
iPhone 16 Pro Max 6.9" iPhone 16 Pro Max case
iPhone 15 6.1" iPhone 15 case
iPhone 15 Plus 6.7" iPhone 15 Plus case
iPhone 15 Pro 6.1" iPhone 15 Pro case
iPhone 15 Pro Max 6.7" iPhone 15 Pro Max case
iPhone 14 6.1" iPhone 14 case
iPhone 14 Plus 6.7" iPhone 14 Plus case
iPhone 14 Pro 6.1" iPhone 14 Pro case
iPhone 14 Pro Max 6.7" iPhone 14 Pro Max case

What About MagSafe?

MagSafe is the one feature that does carry across generations. Every iPhone from the iPhone 12 onward has the MagSafe magnetic ring built in, so MagSafe chargers, wallets, and mounts work across all of these models. If you want a case that snaps to MagSafe accessories, choose a case with magnets built into it and made for your exact model — a non-magnetic case still lets the phone charge wirelessly, but it will not hold accessories in place. (One exception to note: the budget iPhone 16e charges wirelessly but does not have the MagSafe magnetic ring.)

Common Compatibility Mistakes

  • Assuming same screen size means same case. The iPhone 16 Pro and 17 Pro both have 6.3" screens, but their cases are not interchangeable — the dimensions and camera plateau differ.
  • Buying for the family instead of the model. "iPhone 16 case" and "iPhone 16 Pro case" are different products. Match the full Model Name from Settings.
  • Reusing an old case after an upgrade. Even if it seems to fit, a mismatched case can hold buttons down, muffle speakers, or pop off in a drop. It is the most common cause of early phone damage we see.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will an iPhone 16 case fit an iPhone 17?

No. The iPhone 17 is slightly taller, its buttons are positioned differently, and its camera area is a different shape. An iPhone 16 case will not align properly or protect the phone well.

How do I know which iPhone model I have?

Open Settings, tap General, then About. The Model Name field shows your exact model, such as iPhone 15 Pro Max. Buy the case that matches that name exactly.

Do iPhone 15 and iPhone 14 cases fit each other?

No. Although both families include a 6.1" base model, the dimensions and button layouts differ between the two generations, so cases are not interchangeable.

Are MagSafe accessories compatible with all recent iPhones?

Yes. Every iPhone from the iPhone 12 onward supports MagSafe. For the strongest hold, use a case made for your model with magnets built in. The iPhone 16e is the exception — it charges wirelessly but lacks the magnetic ring.

Does the Pro Max use the same case as the Pro?

No. The Pro Max is physically larger than the Pro in every generation, so it needs its own case. Always match the complete model name, including "Plus" or "Pro Max."
