iPhone 18: Release Date, Rumors & Everything Worth Knowing Before You Upgrade

Posted by Dominykas Tikuisis on

Apple is about to break a decade-old habit. For years, every new iPhone generation arrived together in September. Not this time. The iPhone 18 family is being split across two launch windows and depending on which model you're waiting for, your upgrade could land in autumn 2026 or slip all the way to spring 2027.

Here's what the current rumors say, model by model, and what it means if you're planning your next upgrade.

The New Launch Schedule at a Glance

Apple is reportedly reserving September 2026 for its most premium hardware:

  • Autumn 2026: iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and Apple's first foldable iPhone
  • Spring 2027: iPhone 18, iPhone 18e, and (likely) a second-generation iPhone Air

If you normally buy the standard model, that's the big takeaway: there won't be a regular iPhone 18 on shelves this autumn. Apple appears to be spacing out its lineup so the flagship launch gets the spotlight, with the more affordable models following about six months later.

One caveat on timing: some reports suggest the foldable could be announced in September but not actually ship until December, which would leave the Pro models carrying the autumn launch on their own.

Apple's First Foldable iPhone

The most anticipated device of the year doesn't have an official name yet — most people are simply calling it the iPhone Fold. It's expected to open like a book: a compact cover screen of roughly 5.5 inches on the outside, and a larger 7.8-inch display when unfolded.

A few details set it apart from foldables like Samsung's Galaxy Fold or Google's Pixel Fold. Apple is reportedly going with a wider 4:3 aspect ratio, so the device will be noticeably less tall and narrow than its rivals. The chassis is said to be titanium, with engineering focused on keeping the screen crease as invisible as possible.

It's also expected to be remarkably slim possibly around 4.5mm when open and roughly 9mm closed, though estimates vary. That thinness comes with a trade-off: there's likely no room for Face ID hardware, so Apple is expected to build Touch ID into the side button instead, the same approach used on the iPad Air and iPad mini.

The price? Brace yourself. Rumors point to a figure around $2,000 nearly double what an iPhone 17 Pro Max costs today.

The Pro models are shaping up as a refinement rather than a redesign. The overall look should carry over from the iPhone 17 Pro, including the triple-camera plateau on the back, and the display sizes aren't expected to change. Two things could freshen up the front and back, though:

A smaller Dynamic Island. Multiple leaks point to a slimmed-down cutout at the top of the screen, giving the display a cleaner look.

A new deep red finish. Apple is reportedly considering a rich, dark red colourway for the Pro line in 2026 — which would be one of the boldest Pro colours in years.

The most meaningful hardware upgrade may be in the camera: at least one Pro model is rumored to gain a variable aperture on its main lens. That would let you physically control how much light reaches the sensor — better handling of bright scenes, and more creative control over depth of field, without relying purely on software.

Under the hood, expect the new A20 Pro chip built on TSMC's 2-nanometer process (more on that below), a bump to 9GB of RAM according to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, and Apple's own C2 modem with mmWave 5G — a milestone that could finally end Apple's reliance on Qualcomm. The Pro Max may also end up fractionally thicker than the current model.

The Standard iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e

Because these models are further out, details are thinner — but the picture forming is a mixed one.

On the plus side, the standard iPhone 18 should inherit the new A20 chip, and some reports suggest a jump to 12GB of RAM, which would put every iPhone 18 model on equal memory footing. A sharper 24-megapixel front camera is rumored across the whole lineup, up from 18MP today, and the smaller Dynamic Island may trickle down from the Pro models as well. Both the iPhone 18 and 18e could also get the new C2 modem, bringing mmWave 5G to Apple's budget tier for the first time — along with a privacy feature called Limit Precise Location, which restricts how accurately mobile networks can pinpoint your device.

The less exciting news: Apple is reportedly working hard to keep the standard model's price down amid rising memory costs, and that means cost-cutting. Rumored measures include a slightly downgraded display (potentially lower peak brightness), a chip variant with a 4-core GPU instead of 5, and a simplified Camera Control button that drops its capacitive touch layer in favour of pressure sensing alone. The iPhone 18 and 18e are also expected to share more components than ever, narrowing the gap between the two.

Screen sizes should stay put: 6.3 inches for the iPhone 18, 6.1 inches for the 18e.

What Happened to the iPhone Air?

The ultra-thin iPhone Air launched in September 2025 to lukewarm sales, and its sequel has been pushed off the usual schedule. The latest word is that a second-generation model is still in the works, most likely arriving in spring 2027 alongside the standard iPhone 18. To make the $999 price easier to justify, Apple is reportedly exploring a second rear camera — the single lens was one of the original model's most common criticisms.

Will Prices Go Up?

Quite possibly. Apple already raised Mac and iPad prices in mid-2026, and the iPhone is widely expected to follow as new models roll out. How much is anyone's guess — the cost-cutting on the standard iPhone 18 suggests Apple is at least trying to hold the line on its most popular model, even as component prices climb.

Quick Recap

The iPhone 18 generation splits in two: Pro models and the first foldable arrive in autumn 2026, while the standard iPhone 18, the 18e, and a revived iPhone Air follow in spring 2027. Expect 2-nanometer A20 chips across the board, Apple's own C2 modem replacing Qualcomm, sharper selfie cameras, and — for the Pro line — a possible variable aperture lens and a striking deep red finish. The foldable headlines it all, with a book-style design, titanium build, and a price tag likely around $2,000.

As always with pre-release Apple products, everything above comes from supply-chain reports and leaks — treat the details as informed expectation rather than confirmed fact until Apple takes the stage.

A note from Snapbands: with the iPhone 18 and 18 Pro expected to keep their current display sizes, today's case designs should translate closely to next year's models — and we'll have personalised leather cases ready for every new iPhone as it launches. If you're holding onto your iPhone 17 until spring 2027, a fresh monogrammed case is a far cheaper way to make it feel new.
